Level 1 Guide.
The UKCG Level one guide assessment is aimed at people who want to guide in non technical canyons. These would be canyons graded :-
2. Scrambling, easy vertical or near vertical climbing and/or down-climbing requiring frequent use of hands. Rope recommended for hand lines, belays, lowering packs and possible emergency use. Travel is possible up or down canyon. See route description for more information.
C1. Normally has water with current. Waterfalls. Expect to do some deep wading and/or swimming in current. Wetsuit or drysuit may be required depending on water and air temperatures. Class C canyons may be rated more precisely using the following system: 1. Normally has water with light to moderate current. Easy water hazards.
Prerequisite for this course are Technical Canyon.
This Guide assessment would be taken over 1 day. The guide would be expected to guide a group through a canyon within this remit for half of the day and show personal skills for the other half.
A Canyon log book with at least 10 personal canyons 2 rated grade 3/4 and 20 guide days.
Level 2 Guide.
The UKCG Level 2 Guide assessment is aimed at people wanting to guide any level of canyon both in the UK and overseas. It is also aimed at professionals wanting a qualification that will allow them to provide technical advice to outdoor centres in the Canyoning, Gill scrambling and gorge walking sector, and would compliment the BMC MIA assessment or mountain guides scheme.
Guide assessment is over 5 days including all of the Advanced personal skills, Rescue problems and guiding skills.
Prerequisite for this course are Technical canyon, Advanced canyon or a fast track course and canyon rescue.
A Canyon log book with at least 25 personal canyons 4 rated grade 4c, and 40 guide days.
Level 3 Technical / Advanced Instructor.
The UKCG Level 3 Instructor is aimed a people wanting to teach any of the skills training courses.
Prerequisites:- submit a instructor request form, submit a logbook of experience including 40 Guided days, 4 of which should be grade 3/4, attend 2 workshops in the assessment of choice.
Level 4 Canyon Rescue Instructor.
The UKCG Level 4 Instructor is aimed at people wanting to teach canyon rescue and is a good stepping stone into becoming an trainer/assessor. In order to become a canyon rescue instructor you must complete 3 canyon rescue workshops. It is also a good idea to have completed a rope rescue qualification i.e Rescue 3 rope rescue or a rigging for rescue course.
Level 5 Instructor Trainer/Assessor.
Instructor trainers will have being training workshops for 3 years or 10 courses and have been present on 2 guide assessments.
N.B. It is possible to become a none technical guide assessor trainer by becoming a Level 3 instructor technical, providing technical workshops for 2 years or 5 courses and then been present on 2 guide assessments.
